The meeting will be held on TUESDAY, April 5th at 6:00 pm via Zoom. The book for our April meeting is The Eagle Tree by Ned Hayes.
---------------------------------------------------------
Set in Olympia, The Eagle Tree brings us the story of March Wong, a fourteen-year-old boy who is captivated by the lush forests of Western Washington. March experiences the world differently than many and the book has been lauded for its credible and sensitive portrayal of an autistic protagonist. I appreciate this comment from Dr. Temple Grandin: “Every human experience is unique, but The Eagle Tree provides insight into one distinctive and uniquely important perspective. The Eagle Tree seems very authentic to me.”
Author Ned Hayes has a very informative web page that includes resources about autism and other themes of the book and even a video of Hayes reading his book at the Rainier Writing Workshop at Pacific Lutheran University. This webpage, which he calls Ned Notes, also includes biographical information, interviews and information about his other literary and journalistic work. Hayes is also the founder of Oly Arts, an online and print resource dedicated to the arts of all kinds. He comes to writing following a career in tech.
He also looks amazingly like the CEO of a Portland OR tech company, SnowShoe but I can't confirm the Superman-like double life! I can confirm, however, that he dabbles in many ventures including offering his services as a writing coach Regardless, Hayes seems to be a person of boundless curiosity and talent.
Please place a request for The Eagle Tree in the library catalog of your choice or take a look at the purchase options on Hayes' webpage which include an audio version.
The book is available from the Gig Harbor branch of Pierce County Public Library. You can get a copy in one of several ways:
1. Call and identify yourself as a Gig Harbor Literary Society member and the staff will put a copy aside for you.
2. Request through the library website.
3. Request an electronic version through the Libby app on your device. (If you don't know how to do this, the library staff may be able to help.)
We look forward to hearing your thoughts. As always, even if you don't have a chance to read or listen to the book, join us.
We will continue to meet via Zoom until the Library is able to restore programming in the branches.
To join in the zoom conversation you must register on the Pierce County Public Library calendar of events page: https://calendar.piercecountylibrary.org/events
Pour yourself a glass of wine, a beer or a cup of tea and join in the fun.
